Three tons of flip-flops on their way to Gambia thanks to OT Logistics Capital Group

As many as 22,133 pairs of flip-flops collected during the “Flip-flops for Gambia” campaign have set off on their journey to Africa thanks to support rendered by the companies OT L

The campaign, organised by the “Horizon” Science Club operating at the University of Bielsko-Biała, met with a huge response. With the help of 300 ambassadors, 22,133 pairs of flip-flops were collected. The shoes weigh almost 3 tons!

The campaign has been supported by schools, universities, service outlets, scout teams, parishes, shops and many others. Last year, during the campaign’s first edition, students gathered 680 pairs of flip-flops, which they then carried to Gambia in a car.  All these shoes were given to needy children, but they are still in high demand.

Gambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa. Flip-flops collected by campaign organisers will mainly assist in disease prevention and protect children, usually barefooted, from cuts which in a tropical climate often lead to dangerous infections. Flip-flops allow also to protect the youngest Gambians from snakebites and scorpion stings, as well as from the hot, sunbaked sand.

“Flip-flops for Gambia is a campaign which we can support not only financially. Our competence, experience and contacts allow us to guarantee that the cargo will reach the port of destination in a sure and safe manner,” Grzegorz Hinc, the President of the Management Board of C.Hartwig Gdynia S.A., said.

The first stage of this journey is haulage from Bielsko-Biała to Gdańsk. On July 17th, a container will set off from the port of Gdańsk to the port of Banjul, which it is scheduled to reach on August 20th. Simultaneously, the KlapCar – a car carrying a group of volunteer students – will start off on its journey to Africa, from Bielsko-Biała to Gambia. The students will personally present Gambian children with the gathered flip-flops.
